Al Duhail signs Iraqi talent Mohanad Ali
Emir Cup champions hope to fill the void caused by the departure of Moroccan ace Youssef Al Arabi.
Emir Cup champions Al Duhail have signed promising Iraqi striker Mohanad Ali from Al Shorta, strengthening their forward line ahead of the Qatar Stars League.
Mohanad, nick-named Mimi, signed a five-year deal with Duhail who will be looking to regain the QSL crown after finishing second behind Al Sadd in the 2018-19 season.
Mohanad, 19, had represented Iraq in the Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates earlier this year, showing his potential with two goals. He was under the radar of many European clubs, with offers reportedly coming from Juventus, Cagliari and Benfica among others.
Mohanad’s arrival fills a void in Duhail’s frontline after Moroccan Youssef El Arabi, their leading scorer last season with 26 goals, moved to Olympiacos in the Greek Super League.
“Joining Al Duhail is a new challenge in my professional journey, one in which I hope to achieve success with a team that includes a special group of Qatari football stars and competes in the AFC Champions League,” Mohanad said. “I promise everyone that I will do my best to fulfil the responsibility the club has given me.”
After completing his transfer formalities in Doha, Mohanad headed to Portimao in Portugal to join his team-mates who are preparing for the new season under chief coach Rui Faria.
The Qatar Stars League kicks off on August 22.
