Qatar champions Al Sadd will be in elite company this December when they compete in the Club World Cup at home, kicking off the tournament against Oceania champions Hienghene Sport of New Caledonia.

The draw for the December 11 to 21 fiesta was made in Zurich on Monday by former England international Michael Owen. The tournament brings together the champion clubs from FIFA’s six confederations plus the host country champions in a knockout competition.

Al Sadd, reigning Qatar Stars League Champions, could also qualify in another way if they win the AFC Champions League, which will conclude on November 24. In that case, their place in the first round will be taken by the AFC Champions League runners-up.

The first-round winners are drawn against CF Monterrey, the Concacaf champions, on December 14 in the second round. The winners of this game will progress to a semifinal meeting against European champions Liverpool, who get a bye into the round of four.

In the other second round match, also on December 14, the Asian Champions League winners will take on Esperance of Tunisia, the champions of Africa. Esperance came into the tournament after winning a protracted court battle against Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca.

The winners of this second round will take on the South American champions in the other semifinal. The South American club championships, the Libertadores Cup, will conclude only on November 23.

The semifinal matches are scheduled for December 17 and 18, with the final set for December 21.
