Al Wakrah, Qatar SC look to consolidate
The teams made solid starts in opening round matches of the Ooredoo Cup and will be keen to maintain top form.
As the Qatar Stars League takes a break, the Ooredoo Cup will come alive again, with the second round of matches scheduled this weekend.
With the teams missing many of their national and international stars, it will be another opportunity for the youngsters to show their potential and press their case for regular roles in the QSL.
In the first round matches last month, Al Wakrah and Qatar Sports Club had made strong starts to occupy the top spots in Group A and B respectively, with three points each.
Wakrah had trounced a weakened Al Sadd 5-1 in their opening round match while Qatar scored an equally resounding 4-0 verdict over Al Sailiya.
Wakrah will open the second-round action with a game against Umm Salal on Friday. In other Group A matches on Friday, Al Rayyan will take on Al Ahli and Al Sadd play Al Shahania.
Al Rayyan are second in Group A with three points, having blanked Al Shahania 3-0 in their opener. Al Ahli occupy the third spot after their 2-0 win over Umm Salal in the first round.
Group B matches are on Saturday, with Qatar SC taking on Al Gharafa, followed by Al Arabi’s clash against Al Sailiya and Duhail Sports Club’s fixture against Al Khor.
Qatar SC are followed on the Group B table by defending champions Al Gharafa, Duhail, Al Arabi, Al Khor and Al Sailiya in that order.
