Askar appointed Umm Salal coach till end of season
Former Moroccan player steps in as struggling club attempt to ward off relegation from Qatar Stars League.
Qatar Stars League side Umm Salal have appointed former player Aziz Ben Askar as their coach until the end of the season.
The club has been struggling this season with relegation threat looming large. They are placed 11th, one rung above Al Shahania, in the 12-team competition, with just one win from nine matches.
Askar, a former Moroccan international defender, had played for Umm Salal from 2007 to ’10. He is the third coach at the Orange Fortress this season, after Raul Caneda and interim coach Ahmed El Abyad.
Caneda was sacked after eight rounds and El Abyad had stepped in as a temporary arrangement. But that made little difference as Umm Salal lost the ninth round game, to Al Ahli, last week.
