Qatar’s high jump world champion and Olympic silver medallist Mutaz Barshim has been named the 2019 Arab Athlete of the Year by Spanish newspaper AS.

The newspaper called Mutaz Qatar’s ‘High Bird’ and termed him an adventurous figure.

Barshim won the high jump gold at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha in September-October this year with a spectacular performance in front of his home crowd. He cleared 2.37M to claim top honours.

After that effort, he had credited the people of Qatar for spurring him on.

“The people of Qatar are the real winners. They were the ones who cheered me on and helped me win the gold medal,” he had said.
