Iran edges past Kuwait to claim fifth spot
Qatar will take on Saudi Arabia in the bronze medal match while Bahrain will play South Korea for gold on Saturday.
Iran defeated Kuwait 27-25 to finish fifth in the Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament at the Al Duhail Indoor Arena on Friday.
Kuwait, competing in their first handball event after the International Olympic Committee lifted the ban on their national Olympic body four months ago, fought hard for the win but fell short narrowly.
Hong Kong exacted revenge on India for their defeat in Group A by beating them 30-26 in the seventh-place match. The Indians thus finished last.
Hosts Qatar, who crashed to a shocking 26-28 defeat against Bahrain in the second semifinal, will play the bronze medal match, against Saudi Arabia, on Saturday.
It will be followed by Bahrain’s clash against South Korea in the final.
The winners will directly qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics while the runners-up will play another qualification tournament in April.
