It was Qatar’s third match in the friendly international series. And they were up against China at the Al Arabi Sports Club. As in previous games, the hosts held the advantage on this day too but could not convert it into a victory and went down 27-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-27, 13-15.

Clinching the first set gave the hosts splendid momentum — something which they had  struggled to find in the first two matches against India. Winning the closely contested first set 27-25 certainly boosted their morale and it showed in the second set.

Qatar marched ahead with confidence. China struggled to find rhythm which allowed Qatar to build on their lead and the home team closed out the set at 25-20.

Two sets in the bag and just one more to seal the match. That was when China seemed to uncork something special knowing that they were cornered. Qatar’s dominance of the second set seemed to have disappeared as China stormed ahead. The visitors pulled away and won the set 25-20.

Qatar still had a chance to wrap up the match given their advantage. And a win was in sight but China played well in the crucial points. They stayed alive in the set and forced a decider after narrowly winning the fourth set at 27-25.

It was a closely contested fifth set and fortunes swung from one team to the other. Qatar pulled out all the stops but so did China and they just about edged out the hosts at 15-13.
