Qatar’s Under-17 handball team notched up a win in their last round-robin match, defeating Jordan 35-20 in the Arab Championship in Hammamet, Tunisia on Friday.

Qatar led 20-9 at half-time.

The win will see Qatar play Jordan again for the fifth position on Sunday.

While Tunisia and Kuwait (both eight points) will face off for the gold medal, Saudi Arabia and Morocco (six each) clash in the third-place tie on the same day. Qatar finished fifth in the table, with two points, while Jordan remained winless.

It was Qatar’s first win in the tournament and the team’s Serbian coach Ivan Petkovic said that the group finally got their act together.

“We had very little time to prepare for such a strong tournament. But if you look at our performances, we got progressively better with each game. Against Jordan, we functioned as one unit, and that helped us win. We dominated the game throughout,” Petkovic told Inside Qatar, from Hammamet.

“I congratulate the boys for their approach and the will to win. It has considerably raised our confidence levels. We’ve got a day’s break before the fifth-place tie. We’ll try to return with another win under our belt,” added the coach, who took charge just a little over three weeks ago.
