Qatar spikers suffer another defeat in friendly
India see off bold challenge from hosts in keenly-contested five-setter
For the second day running, Qatar’s splendid display failed to end in a win in the volleyball friendly against India. At the Al Arabi Sports Club on Tuesday, India won 28-30, 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 15-13.
As in the first match, just two points separated the teams in the final set. It was an indication of the closeness of the encounter.
Coach Camilo Soto again attempted an experiment, fielding his second string. And his team put up a strong display against the visitors. It was evident from the long-drawn first set. Try as they could, India just could not wrest the advantage. In the end it was the Qatari outfit that eked out a narrow win in the set.
Slighted by the first set loss, India came back strongly in the next two. Qatar failed to hold on to the advantage whenever they were ahead and allowed India to get a foothold in the game. India capitalised to the maximum on the largesse. Qatar attempted a comeback late but it was not enough to prevent the Indians from winning the third set.
Qatar seemed to be making amends in the fourth set. They held onto their advantage and closed out the set at 25-23.
The decider though seemed to be a repeat of the first day’s clash. Qatar failed to win the key points and India wrapped up the set and the match.
