Qatari riders look to make a mark in France

Top Qatari riders Sheikh Ali bin Khalid Al Thani and Bassem Hassan will take part in the Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT) to be held in Saint Tropez, France, from Thursday.

The three-day Athina Onassis Horse Show at the Pampelonne Beach is the 17th leg of the LGCT. It will feature world’s top 100 riders and 200 horses, representing more than 20 nations.

Ben Maher of the United Kingdom leads the rankings with 277 points after 16 shows this season. Bassem is placed 32nd with 130.50 points. He has taken part only in eight shows this year.

Sheikh Ali is way behind at No 125, having taken part only in two shows. His first event was the season opener in Doha and the other in Madrid in May.

The Qatari riders will also participate in the Global Champions League (GCL) as part of the Doha Falcons team, which also includes Michael Whitaker (UK), Jur Vrieling (Netherlands), Bronislav Chudyba  (Slovakia) and Mike Kawai (Japan).

Top riders from different countries compete for team honours in the GCL which is held a day before the LGCT.
