Qatar’s wrestlers target Olympics berth
Abdul Rahman Ibrahim and Bader Bakhit Sharif will seek to do Qatar proud in the World Wrestling Championships in Kazakhstan.
Qatar’s two-member wrestling team left for Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, to take part in the World Wrestling Championships, set to run from September 14 to 22.
The event is also a qualification event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Qatar’s Abdul Rahman Ibrahim will take part in the 70 kg freestyle category while Bader Bakhit Sharif will compete in 77 kg Greco-Roman competition.
Qatar Boxing and Wrestling Federation (QBWF) president Yousuf Ali Al Kazim said the wrestlers would try to qualify for the quadrennial Games.
Abdul Rahman will carry Qatar’s hopes, given his performance at the ’18 Asian Games in Jakarta last August, where he narrowly missed out on a bronze in the 74kg freestyle event.
More than 1000 competitors from 103 countries are expected to take part in the World Championships. Among them are sixty Olympic medallists who will once again target the Summer Games.
