Umm Salal heaved a sigh of relief as they edged Al Wakrah 2-1 for their first victory in the fifth round of the Qatar Stars League on Thursday.

At the Al Arabi Stadium, Yannick Sagbo scored both the Umm Salal goals, netting in the ninth and 79thminutes. Bruno Uvini scored the Al Wakrah goal in the 52ndminute. They also missed a penalty a few minutes before Umm Salal’s second goal.

Umm Salal had started the league with a draw against Al Rayyan before losing their three subsequent games. Thursday’s win helped them to move to four points but it didn’t change their position on the table.

Placed 10th, just above Al Shahania and Qatar Sports Club, Umm Salal have work to do in the coming rounds but it was a heartening comeback by Raul Caneda’s men.

Starting in aggressive fashion, Umm Salal took the lead when Sagbo connected a Murad Naji cross from the right.

Wakrah fought back in the second half and drew level, with Uvini heading in a Cristian Ceballos cross.

Wakrah should have taken the lead when they were awarded a penalty through VAR in the 71stminute after Joao Bruno fouled Mohamed Benyettou. The Algerian, however, wasted the opportunity, firing it straight to goalkeeper Yazan Naim.

They were punished soon after, with Sagbo nodding in a Naji corner to fetch his team a 2-1 lead.

Wakrah, who suffered their third loss, are seventh with six points.

The fifth round will resume on Saturday after a day’s break.
