Salama wins Gulf Amateur chess title

Ghada Al Khelaifi bags silver while Salih Al Hor also wins silver in men's event as Qatar players sparkle.

Qatar’s Salama Al Khelaifi won the women’s title in the Gulf Amateur Chess Championship in Kuwait, edging out her teammate Ghada Al Khelaifi in the nine-round competition which concluded on Tuesday.

Salih Al Hor finished second in the men’s competition that witnessed another close contest.

The battle between Salama and Ghada was the highlight of the event. Both the Qatari players fought neck and neck for the title. They had an equal number of wins, a loss each and had shared honours when they faced off in the fifth round. But as per tiebreak scores, Salama emerged winner, with Ghada claiming silver.

Qatar’s Sara Hassan Al Mohannadi finished sixth.

The contest for the title went down to the wire in the men’s competition also. Salih Al Hor and Bahrain’s Ghasra Ali finished on the same number of points with six wins and three draws. The tie-break saw Ghasra Ali claiming the title.

Qatar’s Abdullah Mohammed Al Homaid finished 14th.
