Wayside Flower, the five-year-old bay filly, which was not the firm favourite but was expected to finish in the top three, surprised many and emerged winner in the Al Ghariya Cup, the main event of the second day’s meeting of the 2019-2020 season at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) race course on Thursday.

The race for thoroughbred fillies and mares and which was run over a distance of 1400M saw jockey Luca Maniezzi steer the filly to a 1-1/2-length win in 1:22.71.

The Injaz Stud-owned horse did the stable and trainer Gassim Mohammad Ghazali proud with a superb run in the final stretch. The win earned the owners QAR57,000.

Trainer Ghazali was again the cynosure on Thursday with three of his horses finishing in the winner’s circle. In fact the Ghazali- JP Guillambert (jockey) combination proved very effective on the day. Guillambert steered the other two Ghazali trained horses – Noble Masterpiece and Al Hareth to wins.

Noble Masterpiece, the five-year-old gelding and Al Hareth, the eight-year-old bay horse, were hardly troubled in their races, winning by 1-1/2 and 1-1/4 lengths respectively.

Ryan Curatolo and Luca Maniezzi also notched up two wins each on the day.

Luca Maniezzi’s effort, helping three-year-old colt Ifreet to an 8-1/2L win in the Local Thoroughbred Maiden Plate, turned out to be the biggest winning margin of the day.
